GREAT 8: Lions' RB continues to shine

Prattville's Justin Albert continues to shine in the playoffs.

The junior running back rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns in Prattville's 23-16 Class 6A semifinal win over Opelika. Albert scored on a 7-yard run in the first half and added a 5-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Leading by three with 2:07 to play, Albert helped secure the win with a 29-yard touchdown run.

In four playoff games, Albert has rushed for 701 yards and 11 touchdowns. For the season he has 1,502 yards and 24 touchdowns on 195 carries. He also has 25 receptions for 313 yards and four scores.

For his performance, Albert leads this week's Montgomery Advertiser Great 8 as the Player of the Week.

Joining Albert on the Great 8 are:

  • James Jackson returned two kicks for touchdowns, intercepted a Winfield pass to end a threat and recovered an onside kick in Pike County's 36-21 Class 3A semifinal win over Winfield. Jackson's 60-yard punt return in the third quarter gave the Bulldogs the lead for good. Jackson's returned a kickoff 83 yards for a score in the first half. Jackson's interception came on first-and-goal at the Bulldog 5. Jackson's onside kick recovery came with less than five minutes to play, with the Bulldogs leading 29-21.

     

     

  • Jerrell Jernigan accounted for two key scores in Eufaula's 28-6 Class 5A semifinal win over UMS-Wright. Jernigan scored on runs of 56 and 85 yards to help lead the Tigers back to the state championship game for the first time since 1981. Jernigan has 21 touchdowns this season.

     

     

  • William Albert picked off a pass and blocked an extra point in Prattville's 23-16 win over Opleika. The senior, who also had five tackles, intercepted Opelika quarterback Brandon Dowdell on the fourth play of the game and broke through to block the kick following the Bulldogs' first touchdown.

     

     

  • Jerome "Junior" Jones scored 70 points in two Tallassee losses last week. Jones had 35 in an 80-68 loss to Trinity and 35 in a 77-71 loss to Valley on Friday.

     

     

  • Amanda Deramus had 52 rebounds and 64 points in four wins for the Stanhope Elmore girls last week. Highlighting the week were a 20-rebound, 10-point performance against Wetumpka and19 points and 16 rebounds against Elmore County.

     

     

  • Courtney Fortson scored 59 points in two wins for the defending 6A state champion Jeff Davis Vols. Fortson scored 34 points in an 84-75 win over Pleasant Grove and 25 to lead the JD boys past Selma 57-43.

     

     

  • Kelly Michelle Lewis scored 53 points in two games for the St. James girls. Lewis scored 31 points in a 68-67 loss to Prattville and 22 in a 61-55 win over Alabama Christian.
