Prattville High School, (Ala.) suffered a terrible blow when coach Lorenzo Pickett collapsed Thursday morning at the Prattville fieldhouse before the Lions' final practice for Friday's game. Pickett, 39, was transferred to the Prattville Baptist Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Pickett was believed to have suffered a fatal heart attack.

Pickett had been the defensive back coach for the Lions for the past seven years and is survived by his three children Nicole, Cordric and Kedric.

This is the second loss in a little more than a month for the Prattville family. Former 2005 graduate and quarterback, Stephen Bicknell, was killed October 15, 2006 when the humvee he was driving struck an explosive device. Private Bicknell was serving his country in the Army's 82nd airborne division in Baghdad, Iraq . Bicknell left behind a wife, Miranda Barrett Bicknell, who is expecting the couple's first child.

Prattville will travel south to Mobile Friday night to take on the Yellow Jackets of McGill-Toolen in the third round of the AHSAA play-offs. The Lions will try to continue their dream of playing for the state championship with heavy hearts. The last time Prattville won the state championship, Lorenzo Pickett was a linebacker for the Lions in 1985.

The on-field results Friday night will not really mean much in the grand scheme of things, but a victory for Prattville may help ease some of the pain they are feeling with the loss of their assistant coach.
