Friday pep rally sends team on the road to state

The road to Prattville High School's second state football championship started at 2 p.m. Friday at the high school gymnasium with a roaring pep rally to send the team off to an undisclosed destination Friday night in preparation for the big game Saturday afternoon.

Principal Lee Hicks started the events by welcoming students and guests, who filled the gym to capacity. The Prattville ROTC presented the colors and the band and cheerleaders began chanting a loud rendition of "we are the Lions." Mr. Hicks then welcomed the football team and coaching staff to the stage.

After Student Government Association President Cory Luckie spoke to the students, the school fight songs blared over the loudspeakers as head coach Bill Clark spoke to the gathering.

As the team prepared to leave on charter buses for Birmingham, the band played "Hooray for Prattville."

Saturday afternoon was picture perfect for the Lions as the temperature at kickoff was 56 degrees with delightful sunshine. The Lions faithful were in the shade on the west side of Legion Field.

Officials of the Birmingham Quarterback Club, co-sponsors of the Super Six, estimated the attendance at the Class 6A championship game to be 30,000. This established a new record for attendance at any championship game in the history of the playoffs.

As the fans left Legion Field, many Prattville fans gathered at many of the Birmingham area restaurants, like the famous Bright Star in Bessemer, which was packed with Prattville fans. The cheers of "Go Lions" by the celebrating fans were welcomed by most guests at the restaurant.
