Lions' championship celebration delayed

The official celebration of the Prattville High School Class 6A state football title is planned for early January.

The 15-0 Lions defeated Hoover High School on Saturday at Legion Field in Birmingham. This is exam week at Prattville High, and the Christmas break starts Friday.

"I spoke with Coach (Bill) Clark early Monday morning and he told me of the school officials' concerns," Mayor Jim Byard said. "We decided it was best to wait."

The celebration will be scheduled for early January, when school is back in session. The event will likely include a parade and festivities at Stanley-Jensen Stadium, home turf of the Lions.

The town did have an unofficial party Saturday night when more than 3,000 people welcomed the team home. The downtown area was covered with hundreds of rolls of toilet paper.
