Smith shines bright in Great 8 list

Prattville quarterback Larry Smith ended his high school career the same way he started -- as a winner.

Smith led the Lions to the 6A championship and their first 15-0 season Saturday with a 35-21 win over Hoover. The Mr. Football finalist didn't put up gaudy numbers, passing for 96 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 78 yards.

But as he's done in his previous 35 wins as the Prattville quarterback, Smith ran the offense effectively and was named the game's MVP.

For his performance, Smith leads this week's Montgomery Advertiser Great 8 as the Player of the Week.

Joining Smith on the Great 8 are:

Justin Albert was another strong candidate for Player of the Week with his performance in Prattville's championship win. The junior running back rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Hoover. Albert's final touchdown, a 64-yard jaunt, late in the fourth quarter sealed Prattville's first championship since 1984.

Tobias Lee passed for 212 yards and three touchdowns in Pike County's 44-14 win over Clay County in the Class 3A state championship. Lee completed 9-of-17 passes and was picked off twice, His touchdowns covered 46, 40 and 70 yards.

Kevin Marshall had six receptions for 158 yards and two touchdowns in Pike County's championship win. Marshall was on the receiving end of 40- and 70-yard touchdown plays.

Darrell Reynolds made his presence known in every phase of the game for Pike County. Reynolds rushed for 98 yards and a score and recorded five tackles, forced a fumble, recovered two fumbles and picked off a pass. He also kicked a 26-yard field goal and two extra points.

Reggie Dozier led Prattville's defensive effort in the title game. The junior defensive back recorded 12 tackles, including three for a loss. His two sacks led a defense that harassed Hoover quarterback Ross Wilson. The Lions finished with six sacks.

Xavier Crews recorded seven tackles and scored Eufaula'a only touchdown in a 10-7 Class 5A championship loss to Athens. Crews' touchdown came on a 5-yard run in the second quarter.

Jerrel Jernigan passed for 100 yards and rushed for 83 in Eufaula's loss to Athens, accounting for 183 of Eufaula's 399 yards.
