Top-ranked Prattville likes to set the tone early. When defensive back Willie Mullens picked off a Jeff Davis pass 14 seconds into Friday's game, the tone was set.
The Vols put up a fight early, but Prattville ran away with a 62-0 win. "Our coaches told us to come out and play ball," said Mullens, who picked off two passes. "We tried to set the tone on the first play."
The Lions (3-0, 2-0 Class 6A, Region 4) rolled up 505 yards of offense, including 306 on the ground to win their 25th consecutive game against a region opponent. "JD came out after us," Prattville coach Bill Clark said. "Willie made a great play to start the game and we had several other guys step up with big plays. It's hard to explain. It just sort of snowballed." Prattville extended its overall winning streak to 18 games and will try for its 50th consecutive regular-season victory next week at Wetumpka. "Wetumpka is a great football team," Clark said. "They're 3-0 and they've got those good skill players back from last year. They're as good a team as we're going to face." JD (2-1, 1-1) was a handful for Prattville in the first quarter. The Vols marched to the Prattville 2-yard line on their second possession. Prattville stopped JD at the 1 on fourth down. "We had to overcome a little adversity at first," Prattville running back Justin Albert said of the Vols' performance in the first quarter. "We were able to get going and strike quickly a couple of times. It's big for the offense to get on and off the field." The Lions struck quickly and often. Only two of the Lions' scoring drive took more than four plays. Prattville needed eight plays to complete a 99-yard drive following the goal line stand and seven plays to complete a 97-yard scoring drive after a Zach Brownell interception in the second half. "The defense did another good job," junior receiver Quaylen Moncrief said. "The goal line stand they made early was big and so were the turnovers. It was a total team effort. We just did what we've done so many times in practice." Four of Prattville's touchdowns came after JD interceptions. Albert put Prattville on the board first, capping a three-play drive with a 30-yard touchdown run. The senior rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries and returned a punt 65 yards for another score. Quarterback Casey Weston and receiver Lewis Haley made it 15-0 early in the second quarter. Following the goal line stand, Weston hit Haley with a pass at the line of scrimmage. Haley broke one tackle and eluded several more defenders as he raced to the end zone for a 54-yard score. Dekendrick Moncrief ran in for the two-point conversion. Mullens' second interception set up Quaylen Moncrief's 46-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Davis before Albert made it 28-0 on a 6-yard run midway through the second quarter. Weston hit Quaylen Moncrief on a 42-yard strike to open the second-half. Albert's punt return and a Dekendrick Moncrief 14-yard run ended the scoring for the starters. The Prattville subs scored the final two times, with Cade Lawrence hitting Cornelius Fenderson for a 30-yard score and Corey Shelton scored on a 43-yard run with 20 seconds left. Weston finished with 141 yards passing and two touchdowns on 8-of-10 completions. He also rushed for 79 yards.
